DRAWING [02-08-2019] SOLANGE MA’AM

In the start of the lecture we were asked why do we draw?

There were multiple answers to this question. We draw to see, we draw to understand, we draw to register, we draw to communicate, we draw to investigate, we draw to convey, we draw to represent, we draw to abstract (we abstract to draw the essence of something).

There are certain elements and principles of visual language that are common to all visual language. They are –

1)POINT – It is the first mark. It symbolizes the beginning and a centre for focus.

2)LINE – A series of points make a line. A line can be straight, curved, jagged, wavy, tentative.

3)SHAPE – When a line encloses a space it creates a shape. Shapes are two dimensional.

4)FORM – A three dimensional shape is form.

5)SPACE – Te space occupied by the figure, the ground surrounding it and the perspective that we bring to a two dimensional plane are all examples of the use of space to organise elements in a visual work.

6)COLOUR – Colour is the emotional component in a visual work. It can be understood as a hue, value as a component and most essentially as a sensation of light.

7)TEXTURE – The tactile element of a visual work is its texture.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN –

  1. UNITY AND HARMONY
  2. BALANCE
  3. SCALE AND PROPORTION
  4. EMPHASIS/FOCAL POINT/DOMINANCE/HIERACHY
  5. RHYTHM/REPITITION
  6. PROXIMITY AND PRINCIPLE OF GESTALT
  7. GRADATION
  8. SMILARITY
  9. CONTRAST
  10. MOVEMENT

We also saw the movie ‘LOVING VINCENT’ which is a movie based on the life of VINCENT VAN GOGH and the entire movie is depicted in Vincent’s style of painting by applying strokes. I noticed that the entire movie uses proper lights and shadows wherever required.
