SUSTAINABLE SYSYEMS (ELIZABETH MATHEW) [26-03-2020]

We started off this class with our basic research work, ma’am told us to research and focus on a particular city, so we decided to ahead with Mumbai and started with our research work. We researched about the steps and preventions taken by the government to maintain cleanliness and follow waste practices in the city. We had discussions about the unhygienic conditions of slums in Dharavi, Worli Koliwada and the conditions of water bodies all over Mumbai.

Along with the research work we also started to come up with ideas for our educational module. We first decided to choose our target audience , we were a little confused in the start but we came up to a decision that our target audience would be kids from the age group of 7 years to 12 years. We went for this age group so that it would help them build these practices from now only. Now the next task was to design the education module. Our entire project was limited to a certain area so we couldn’t really figure out what can be done. But since our target audience were kids, the very first thing that popped up in everyone’s mind was a game. We thought of presenting a game module. We came up with a lot of ideas like snakes and ladders, ludo , monopoly , twisters etc.

We finally decided to go ahead with twisters. For this game we agreed on keeping a few basic questions on cleanliness and waste practices like how often do you wash your hands, what is cleanliness according to you etc. We also decided on making this so that they are entertained while playing this game along with gaining information on cleanliness and waste practices.

This was our basic research work :- Waste management rules in India are based on the principles of “sustainable development”, “precaution” and “polluter pays”. These principles mandate municipalities and commercial establishments to act in an environmentally accountable and responsible manner—restoring balance, if their actions disrupt it. The increase in waste generation as a by-product of economic development has led to various subordinate legislation’s for regulating the manner of disposal and dealing with generated waste are made under the umbrella law of Environment Protection Act, 1986 (EPA). Specific forms of waste are the subject matter of separate rules and require separate compliance, mostly in the nature of authorizations, maintenance of records and adequate disposal mechanisms.

Mumbai is not clean city . The slums and the neighboring canals are way cluttered. They lack proper sanitation facilities compounding the problems. The air pollution levels are the highest in India.

Cleanliness means that there is no dirt, no dust, no stains, no bad smells. The goals of cleanliness are health, beauty, absence of offensive odor and to avoid the spreading of dirt and contaminants to oneself and others. In the case of glass objects such as windows or windshields, the purpose can also be transparency. Washing is one way of achieving cleanliness, usually with water and often some kind of soap or detergent. Waste management refers to the practice of collecting, transporting, processing or disposing of, managing and monitoring various waste materials. It is important to observe sustainability in this aspect so that every bit of waste can be managed in an efficient manner rather than just dumping it all in landfills.

The deliverables for the next class were the presentation and a basic layout of our module.
