ESSENTIAL SERIES (MIND LINES) [21-08-2019] MITALI MA’AM

In this class we firstly learnt how to render different skin tones. I observed which colours are to be used and how the highlight and the shadow falls.

We learnt a very interesting way of determining skin tones which can be simply done by looking at the veins on our wrists. There are three types of undertones tones which remain the same all our lives. They are cool, warm and neutral.

If your veins appear to be blue or green, you are a neutral skin tone. If they appear green, you are a warm skin tone and if it appears to be blue or purple, you are a cool skin tone. This is necessary to understand while rendering skin colours.

After this we spoke about different types of rendering techniques. They are as follows :

HATCHING – Hatching is an artistic technique of drawing parallel lines very close to each other to create tonal values.
CROSS HATCHING – Cross hatching is the drawing of two layers of hatching at right angles to create a mash like pattern.
SCRIBBLING – Scribbling is using overlapping circular movements of a pencil.

STIPLING – Stipling is making dots either close to or far away from each other to show different shades.

There are other techniques like chevron, lines and dots, ripples, interlocks, etc.

Shades can be achieved by changing the pressure and type of pencil. Tone is the lightness or darkness of an abject.
