We started off this class by revising the gestalt principles. The six gestalt principles are :
Similarity:similarity states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation will be seen as belonging together.
Continuity : Continuity states once the eye begins to follow something, it will continue traveling in that direction until it encounters another object.
Closure : Closure states that individuals perceive objects such as shapes, letters, pictures, etc., as being whole when they are not complete.
Proximity : Proximity states that objects or shapes that are close to one another appear to form grouped.
Figure ground : Figure/Ground examines how the eye can separate shapes in a design from the background of that design.
Symmetry : Symmetry states that elements that are symmetrical to each other tend to be perceived as one.
Since this was the first class of the semester, it was pretty chilled.
Sir gave us a brief about what the second semester was going to be about. We understood that this semester was more experimental base and less skill base. There was more of theory and reading involved in this semester.
In the second half we choose a Tim Burton movie and made a poster on it using illustrator and photoshop. All of Tim Burton’s movies have a strong element of dark/humour/fantasy/horror.
I choose to take ‘The nightmare before Christmas’ which is a stop-motion animated dark fantasy film. I illustrated my entire poster on illustrator and then edited it on photoshop.
After the long break, this was very helpful because we got a chance to revise all the tools in illustrator and photoshop while making the poster. We made the entire poster by using different tools and not image tracing.
Also, we saw the unique style of Tim Burton to depict whatever he wants to.
