We started off this class we were asked a question – what are the important elements on the cover of a book?
I think it’s the hierarchy of typography, author’s name and the tag line of the book. Also the colours and tones used on the cover is very important.
TYPOGRAPHY is the art and technique of arranging letters to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. It adds to the tones of a book(any publication). The kind of font you choose affects what you want to depict. The various types of fonts are : monotype, block type, serif, sans serif, calligraphy.
⁃ Monotype is a font whose letters and characters each occupy the same amount of horizontal space.
⁃ Block font is a sans serif style font mostly in capital letters having thick curves and lines shaping the letter. They are not usually used for body of texts, and they are best for large-type needs such as advertisements or signages. Block fonts are clear and readable.
⁃ Serif is a small line or stroke attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol. A font family making use of serifs is called a serif font. Serif font is used for a serious note and is more formal.
⁃ Sans serif is the font without the extending stroke called ‘serif’ attached to it. It is often used to convey simplicity and minimalism and is easy to read. Mostly al social medias use this type of font.
⁃ Slab serif is a type of font with thick block-like serifs which have either blunt and angular or rounded edges.
⁃ Black letter is a typeface which is recognisable by its dramatic thin and thick strokes and in some fonts, the elaborate swirls on the serifs.(old British font)
⁃ Calligraphy is anartistic writing style where you vary the pressure to create thick and thin lines, all in a single stroke. It involves a nibbed pen or a brush.
Kerning : Kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between letters, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result.
Ligatures : Ligatures occur when two or more letters are joined together.
We even learnt how to number pages on indesign(make a text box>go to type>insert special characters>markers>current page number)
